Songs that send you places
Apr. 15th, 2010 11:46 amThe ancient Greek ancestor of our word ecstasy is ekstasis, formed of ek (outside or beyond) and stasis (“standing, stature” or “standing still, stationariness” or “the place in which one stands or should stand, position, posture, station”).
The OED records ekstasis transforming in meaning in “late” Greek, becoming “withdrawal of the soul from the body, mystic or prophetic trance.”
In other words, something that send you somewhere else.
Are there any songs that send you to a different place?
The Beatle's "Strawberry Field's Forever" brings me to a large garden with ruins and horse riding. Sarah McLachlan's "Into the Fire" brings me to jungle forest, and the effect seems to last for a while after hearing the song. "Silent Lucidity" reminds me of a dream that I had when I was a child. Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" makes me think of medieval rose gardens. Air's "Cherry Blossom Girl" brings me to a Japanese tea garden. Kokomo seems like its trying to send people to a tropical island, but fails for me.
